Multiple intelligence
First conceived by Harvard professor, Howard Gardner in his 1983 book, Frames of Mind, the theory of Multiple Intelligences expands our understanding of “intelligence” beyond the familiar linguistic and logical – mathematical intelligences (“three Rs” of reading, Writing and Arithmetic) to include the spatial, musical, body- kinesthetic, naturalist, interpersonal, intra personal and spiritual intelligences.
Our job as teachers is to identify and nurture all of our students’ talents. Too often schools focus only on the linguistic and logical- mathematical intelligences. While these are very important- kids must learn how to read, write and compute- they only scratch the surface of children’s talents. The Multiple Intelligence model confirms our intuition that all children have talents.
